Assin Foso, Ghana – St. Francis Xavier Catholic Hospital is pleased to announce the successful receipt of grant funding under the project titled “RIGHTS, DIGNITY AND HEALTH: A Comprehensive Project for Mothers and Children in Assin Foso Municipality.”
The project is funded by the Community of Madrid (Comunidad de Madrid), Spain, through the Benito Menni Foundation, reflecting a shared commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare while promoting human rights, dignity, and quality care for women and newborns.
The project has received a grant of €31,946.00 from the Community of Madrid. In line with the funding agreement, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Hospital will contribute €31,214.47 as counterpart funding, primarily to support the acquisition of essential medical equipment. The combined investment of over €63,000 demonstrates the strong partnership between the hospital and its international partners in strengthening healthcare services within the Assin Foso Municipality.
Transforming Maternal and Child Healthcare
The project is designed to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide safe, respectful, and comprehensive maternal and newborn healthcare. Key interventions include:
- Installation and commissioning of medical equipment at the hospital’s new maternity complex to enhance service delivery.
- Development and implementation of Rapid Response Protocols and Chain of Custody procedures for obstetric emergencies, ensuring timely, coordinated, and accountable emergency care.
- Capacity building for healthcare workers through training in Human Rights, Humanized Care, and Confidential Reporting Mechanisms to promote respectful maternity care and patient-centered services.
- Training and sensitization of Traditional Birth Attendants (Traditional Midwives) to strengthen collaboration between communities and the formal health system, encouraging timely referrals and safer deliveries.
- Community education campaigns on the warning signs of obstetric emergencies, empowering families to seek prompt medical attention and reducing preventable maternal and neonatal complications.
- Strengthening Neonatal Intensive Care Services (NICU) to improve the survival and quality of care for premature and critically ill newborns.
- Provision of psychosocial support for mothers, creating safe spaces where women can share experiences, rebuild confidence, and recover emotionally following childbirth complications. This component recognizes that true recovery extends beyond clinical treatment to restoring dignity, resilience, and reintegration into family and community life.
