Isolation Ward

Isolation Ward

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE UNIT

The ward was formally known as HOLDING AREA which came into existence on March 28th 2020 through the effort of the able Hospital Management Team following the outbreak of Covid 19 infection in Ghana where it became necessary to start admitting people who were suspected and confirmed of Covid 19 infection when the cases were increasing rapidly. The very first confirmed cases were 2 staff. The physiotherapy Unit, Chest unit and Rehabilitation units were converted to Holding area. Staff and all logistics were borrowed from other wards at the commencement of the unit. The unit comprises space for Pre Triage, suspected and confirmed cases of Covid 19. The unit has 18 beds capacity out of 10 for confirmed cases and 8 for suspected cases.

Cases which go to the unit normally pass through pre-triage and Accident and Emergency as a suspect. Patients are encouraged to produce sputum in a labelled container in a confined place which is then sent to KCCR at Kumasi for testing. In February 2021 the unit had its own Covid 19 laboratory where samples were tested and results gotten within 24 to 48 hours.

In January 2022, the unit was renamed   ISOLATION WARD by the Management Team of the hospital where all kinds of infectious conditions are managed.

SOME INCIDENCES ENCOUNTERED DURING THE PANDEMIC

  1. Some staff of the facility were infected. This posed fear in some of the staff, which led to low staff capacity due to 10 working days of mandatory quarantine, a quiet number of staff were on excuse duty.
  2. Refusal of Admission: Patients and relatives turn out to refuse admission due to the stigmatization of the Covid 19 and quarantine. Some patients refuse admission and report back to the ward later in a very critical condition.
  3. Denial of Covid results by some patients and their relatives (POSITIVE CASES): This was a result of stigma and was inaccessible to a hard copy of result. Those who had the chance to have it too are unable to interpret the results.
  4. Along the line, the management of the hospital was providing lunch from the hospital canteen for staff on day shift, this was to prevent staff from moving around in search of food and water. On weekends, special meals were served. Kudos to Management for that.
